Andrew and Abigail Turnbull, organisers of Richmond Horse Trials and owners of Richmond Equestrian Centre, said; “We are utterly devastated for everyone concerned. The support we received last week when entries were low was completely overwhelming. To have to cancel today, with over 800 entries, nearly 50 generous sponsors and all our officials and wonderful volunteers in place, is absolutely heartbreaking for us. 

“Since our last event in May we have been working so hard, prepping the ground and courses, organising behind the scenes and getting the centre ready for the riders to have the best possible experience. 

“For no one to see Richmond Horse Trials at its very best is extremely sad for us all. We hope everyone supports us when we return next Spring and we would like to thank you all for your positive comments.”

Jude Matthews, British Eventing CEO, added; “I am very sad for all involved at Richmond Horse Trials, and support their decision to cancel.”

The affected horse is in isolation and Richmond Equestrian Centre is working with their veterinarian to ensure appropriate steps are in place to minimise risks to the wider equine population; including the cancellation of events at their facility and restricting the movement of horses. 

All entries will be refunded in full.

The BE100 Regional Final will be relocated to Alnwick Ford International (28-29 September)
